Overview

Product Description

HealthyTails aims to provide pet owners with resources to help monitor and manage their pet’s health. This product pairs a mobile application with an external wearable SmartCollar worn by a dog or cat. The key features of HealthyTails include:

  • Basic measurements of the pet’s health

    • Body temperature, heart rate, activity level, and hours of sleep

  • A place to record and store information about the pet’s health

  • Notifications when unhealthy measurements are observed for a prolonged time

  • Professional online advising from a licensed veterinarian at any time

Problem Statement

Pet owners often consider their dogs or cats to be valuable members of their family. The health of their pet is important to them, but taking a pet to the veterinarian can be expensive. Owners also have a hard time distinguishing appropriate times to visit a vet over any unusual problems they notice. They don’t want to overreact and spend unnecessary money, but they don’t want to ignore a sign of bigger health problems or something that may develop into something serious.

Vision Statement

To remedy our user’s problem, our goal is to provide the user with information to keep their pet healthy, avoid potential health problems, and deal with current ailments.

Context

The HealthyTails app and collar have been created as a project for an upper-level undergraduate Human Centered Design and Engineering class over the course of ten weeks. This course is provided by the University of Washington and was taken in the Spring quarter of 2019. The user group chosen was dog and cat owners as animals were an interest that everyone in the group shared.
